About
Braiding, an ancient Mediterranean craft
Braiding is one of the oldest crafts in the Mediterranean. For centuries, skilled hands have assembled plant fibers to create everyday objects that are as beautiful as they are useful. At COSYDAR-DECO, we design our own models and collaborate with Mediterranean artisans who craft them according to our designs, perpetuating traditional techniques. Each piece in this collection is an original Cosydar creation and bears the marks of its maker: knots, irregularities, variations in tone – all signatures that no machine could reproduce.
Carefully selected natural fibers
This collection brings together decorative objects and pieces made from five fibers chosen for their character and Mediterranean roots:
- Palm rope: robust fiber extracted from the date palm, with a warm hue that develops a patina over time. Widely used for suspensions, baskets, and structural pieces, it brings a strong presence to the objects made from it.
- Raffia: fine and flexible fiber, with a light hue and delicate braid. Particularly appreciated for delicate and airy pieces – hats, lampshades, fine baskets – that require finesse and precision.
- Esparto grass: traditional fiber from North Africa and the Mediterranean basin, with a golden color and tight weave. Robust and durable, it has been used since antiquity for mats, rugs, and distinctive baskets.
- Seagrass: dense fiber with golden-green tones, naturally resistant to moisture. Ideal for structured pieces and furniture elements, it brings a distinct and durable texture to interiors.
- Palm leaf: flat braided fiber, with a light hue and characteristic texture. Often used for distinctive accessories – hats, placemats, decorative baskets – that are unlike anything else.
All our pieces are crafted with respect for the fiber, without excessive chemical treatment. Each fiber retains its flexibility, its natural scent, and its ability to age gracefully.
What can you find in this collection?
This selection covers a variety of uses, from pure decoration to functional everyday items:
- For the floor: woven mats made of Mediterranean fibers, to place in an entryway, reading nook, or bedroom.
- For walls and doors: braided fiber curtains, decorative wall baskets, hanging bells, and braided mirrors.
- For windows: lightly woven pieces that gently filter light.
- For furniture: natural fiber headboards, which transform a bedroom by their mere presence.
- For everyday accessories: traditional fiber brooms, which remain functional while being beautiful enough to leave on display.
- For style: palm leaf hats, characterful accessories that extend the natural spirit into fashion.
Why choose handmade braided fiber pieces?
Buying a hand-braided piece means choosing visible authenticity. Where machines produce perfect but soulless objects, human hands create unique pieces. Every knot, every twist, every variation in shade tells the story of the artisan's touch. You're not bringing home a standardized product – you're bringing home an original Cosydar creation, handcrafted according to our designs, born from hours of manual labor.
It's also choosing living materials. Plant fibers evolve with time: they acquire a patina, reflect light differently, become softer. An esparto grass mat after a few years possesses a beauty that no industrial product can match.
Finally, it's an environmentally friendly choice. The natural fibers used in this collection are biodegradable, renewable, and processed in small-scale workshops. No plastic, no long-distance transport for intermediate components: just plant material, hands, and transmitted expertise.
How to incorporate natural fibers into your decor?
Braided fibers naturally complement all other materials: raw wood, wrought iron, linen, ceramics. It's this blend – fibers + wood + metal – that creates the warmest and most authentic interiors.
Here are a few ideas to get started:
- A seagrass or esparto grass mat placed under a coffee table, in an entryway, or at the foot of a bed, to add warmth to the floor.
- A braided fiber headboard to give a bedroom immediate character without painting or renovations.
- A fiber curtain as a soft separation between two spaces, or as a window dressing to filter light.
- A traditional fiber broom leaning against a kitchen or entryway wall – functional and decorative at the same time.
- A palm leaf hat hung on a wall as a sculptural object, or placed on a console table.
The idea is never to match, but to let the materials interact with each other. It is in this blend that the authenticity of a natural interior is born.
Our creations, crafted by Mediterranean artisans since 2014
Since 2014, COSYDAR-DECO has been designing its own models and collaborating with a network of artisans in the Mediterranean who craft each piece according to our designs. This dual mastery of design and traditional craftsmanship is what gives our natural fiber objects their soul, their uniqueness, and their lasting value. Each piece you discover in this collection is an original creation, handmade with respect for techniques passed down through generations.
